How it all started…….

I started playing golf seriously at 15. My first handicap was 30 and in my first full year managed to get cut to 12.

I joined Barclays Bank after I finished school and played for the bank as well as playing in meetings and matches.

My first victory came at Salisbury and South Wilts, shooting level par off 10 Handicap and winning by 10 shots!

I turned pro in 1992, having completed my PAT at the country Club of New Hampshire in the US.

I started my career in 1995 at Spring Valley CC in Sharon Massachusetts.

In the states I played in a US Open Qualifier at Agawum Hunt Club in Rhode Island – competing against players like Brad Faxon and Brett Quigley

To this day, I have never been so nervous as I was standing on the 1st tee, playing my first professional tournament and getting my name announced through a PA system!!

Somehow, managing to find the first fairway and par the first 7 holes….then the realisation kicked in. Somehow

I managed to hold my score till the 14th being 2 over at this stage. After seeing the scoreboard, I realised I needed to be 1 over to qualify. I went for the par 5 on the 15th in 2 shots… Then Splash – triple bogey! I managed to break 80, holing a tough putt on the last to shoot 79, which looking back on was not a bad start to my pro career, considering the circumstances.

My Career path………

I started my training at Donnington Valley Golf Club in Newbury. This gave me great intro into the golf world in the UK
Whilst club I passed my PAT (Playing Ability Test) at Oake Manor Golf Club in Taunton

I then moved to Leaderboard Golf Centre in Reading. This provided me with a great knowledge of custom fitting and retail, being the largest in the area.

In 2003 I was fortunate enough to travel around the world, visiting South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, New Zealand, Australia and the South United States.

I then moved to Ferndown Golf Club, specialising in coaching and Custom Fitting. I was only there for about 6 months before I was fortunate to get my first head professional position at New Forest Golf in Lynhurst.

Whilst at New Forest, I was running my own retails business, custom fitting and Teaching. I also taught at a few schools in Newbury and Reading.

Having found a key interest and huge enjoyment from coaching children I started my on-site schools coaching business called “Murray Golf Schools” boasting 14 schools in Reading, Newbury, Southampton, Winchester, Fareham and Salisbury.

I continued to coach at these school for 12 years. I then started my own junior academy at Walhampton Golf Club in Lymington.

I was then head hunted to move to Paulton’s Golf Centre where I set up a new Junior Academy and became the clubs Golf Development Professional. This involved actively encourage the growth of the game at grass roots and beyond.

In 2016 I started up the Hampshire EZGO junior tour and ran this for 7 years at various courses in Hampshire.
Having worked at the club 3 years I decided to work closer to home and was lucky that Mike Dodd at Sturminster had an opening which I accepted with gratefully.

I have now been at Sturminster for 4 years and am also Coaching at Canford School…..
